Portfolio of Films

Our architectural films are collaborations at heart, with architects, designers, and builders telling the story in their own voice. They share why a plan bends to light, how materials choose the form, and where a city meets the threshold. We listen, follow, and shape the moments into architectural documentaries that feel honest and human, keeping the frame clear so their craft, conviction, and quiet pride come through.

Named after the street it fronts, Charles Drive House is shaped, composed and arranged out of respect for its Sonoran hillside site. Rather than impose a preconceived building on a rocky slope, the architecture is subordinate to nature. Therefore, it will get better with age!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a modern home? A home where the line between inside and out is so blurred that nature sometimes comes crawling into your room. Are you afraid modern architecture is only for childless Avant guard art collectors who wear black turtleneck sweaters even in summer? Then take a moment to watch this Desert Wash video and see modern living through a child’s eye. It will change your perspective about what site sensitive modern architecture can be.

Desert Wash is a unique modern home designed to celebrate nature and desert living. A home that turns an unwelcome obstacle for traditional residential design, a desert wash which periodically floods throughout the year, into a focal feature of natural beauty that delights and inspires a young energetic family (did I mention adorable?) teaching life lessons everyday about living as one with nature.

Watch as your two adorable hosts, ages 3 and 5, take you on a tour of their home, introducing you to new and wonderful creatures including the elusive Desert Tiger and Road Rumber. See how rammed earth walls, expansive glass and floating steel and wood clad roofs shelter a family in modern beauty and provide the perfect backdrop for their extensive collection of art and Asian artifacts. But mostly see how much fun everyday living in the desert, amongst natures ever changing wonder, can be.

Located in in the heart of downtown Miami, Brickell City Centre is a brand new $1.05B construction project that is reshaping south Florida. This mixed use project spans 3 city blocks and has 5 high-rises including the well known “East” brand hotel. Developed by Swire Properties and constructed by Americaribe, this project promises to bring a whole new lifestyle to the residents of Brickell.

The Climate Ribbon is a first-of-it’s-kind steel structure made of glass, steel, & fabric. Arguably one of the largest art installations on the southeast United States, it functions as a canopy to protect shoppers at Brickell City Centre from the natural elements. Many years of architectural planning and scientific research has gone into creating a functional piece of art that actually harnesses the air coming off of Biscayne Bay and channels it into the retail area. Using the newest technologies available, the Climate Ribbon shows that A.C. is not necessary even in the hottest of areas in the US like Miami.

Chibi Moku & Americaribe gives you an in-depth look at the architectural and scientific facets of the Climate Ribbon and shows the world what is possible with a little bit of ingenuity.

Situated on what most considered to be an unremarkable parcel of land compromised by both natural and municipal zoning limitations, architect Brent Kendle, AIA, LEED AP of Kendle Design Collaborative turned these limitations into advantages by flipping the traditional layout of the home on its head. Social living areas are placed on the second level where previously unseen views of the surrounding mountains and city lights prevail in all directions. Private living areas are placed at ground level. A massive desert wash which cut the developable footprint in half and seen by most as an impediment to a good design, is instead capitalized on as an unobstructed view corridor affording distant valley views as well as engaging the homes young family to interact with untouched nature in an otherwise urban environment.

Take an in-depth look at the brand new “Residence at Kerry Park” in Seattle, Washington.

After developing two other projects with mainstream interior design approaches, owner Ken Woolcott decided he wanted an “artist” for the interior build-out of his new residence across from Seattle’s iconic view location at Kerry Park on Queen Anne. Viewing the structure and shapes of the existing building, painter and interior designer Michael Sofie suggested that the flow of the exterior evoked Art Deco as a primary theme. “I love Art Deco” was Ken’s immediate reply, setting the stage for a dramatic exercise spanning several design periods.

“Most true Art Deco homes of the time were remodeled from earlier periods such as Empire, and contained elements of later style periods such as Art Nouveau and Modern” explains Sofie. So this interior includes all of these periods to establish the authenticity of the home’s interior design. “When working with Art Deco it is extremely important to use the best materials and the best craftsmen to properly realize the design” says Sofie, “or you wind up with cheesy 80’s”. The bar had been set, and owner Ken Woolcott was up to the challenge.

3D modeling was used extensively by Sofie’s team at West Highland Design to enable a quick iterative process combining design with photo-quality computer renderings to give the owner a clear and precise picture of the finished spaces and details before investing in the actual construction. The results are a spectacular example of the true opulence and grace of the Deco period. “The results are truly amazing” says Woolcott, “given the complexity and detailing I don’t know how you would do it any other way”.

Mark Sever’s own words –

The story for my project begins with my client visiting Arizona looking for a home to purchase and to retire. Every home they wanted to see that was for sale happened to be one of my homes. (truly not that many but they only considered what was on the market that happened to be mine.)

They reached out to me after seeing several of my past projects. I reviewed several lots and this is where we left it years ago.

They eventually retired and reached out to me to look at a site they found. I loved it as much as they did.

A cul-de-sac lot with challenges defined the program. I found a solution in designing a plan based on a small resort where guests are greeted by a grand entrance surrounded by water features, beautiful landscaping and interesting structural features.

My clients love to entertain. Every program requirement was about enjoying the Arizona lifestyle while creating a resort-style environment. My program used materials that are timeless and display well and are lasting. I visit them often and every time I do, they are deeply involved in a project such as making a grand meal, and I only see clients enjoying their home.

My approach to architecture and building is to encourage activities where my client does not think about the materials used in their home. The materials work for them. They employ these materials while always enjoying the experience of using them.

George and Susan Master wanted to downsize from their 5400-sf territorial style home in North Scottsdale into a soft contemporary 3000 sf home. Though not a “small house” it was a significant reduction. In many ways this has been more difficult to design a smaller plan that met all the needs of their lifestyle. There could be no wasted space and the scale and rhythm had to hit right on.

We found a lot in the North Scottsdale community of Sincuidados that offered privacy and a rich relationship with the native desert as a driving factor. Seamless indoor/outdoor living is one of the great opportunities we have as designers in the Desert Southwest. This was no exception.

We began the process to define a concept of compact living related to the views, the character and features of the site, and to create a unique experience. We talked a lot at every step. The Owners envisioned the use of a feature wall that gave definition and root to the design. We had to find something that met that dynamic, created a core component, and was within their budget. The choice was to use a patterned block composed of varied color and texture units. This defined the entry experience, created a spline through the home, and anchored the indoor/outdoor fireplace mass.
This material occurs also in the freestanding columns giving additional rhythm and continuity of that motif.

Each space in the home has a sense of continuation and openness where the eye gets a hint of what happens beyond. Together, with Susan’s eye for interiors and the help of her designer, the finishes came out simple yet rich. One is very comfortable in this house, with its volumes and surfaces, and with the natural light that plays throughout.

The best mark of success in this, and any project, is the satisfaction and happiness of the client enjoying their new home. We hope you enjoy George’s thoughts about this as he shares the experience.

When I first visited this location, the opportunities presented by the incredible views was completely overwhelming. The site is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, on a golf course with good, natural privacy all around, and spectacular views of the distant, Continental Mountains. The most difficult question was how best to showcase these assets and take advantage of all of the natural features and views afforded by this location.

During the conceptual planning phase, the first consideration was how best to enter this home and which spaces should showcase which views. A softly, curving concept with the major spaces projecting out like ‘spokes on a wheel’ with the entry located at the central ‘hub’ facing the primary view was decided early on in the design process. Additionally, a curving entry drive court with an automatic gate was selected to enhance this concept. When entering the foyer from the drive court, one is presented with a spectacular view through the great room, past an incredible stone fireplace and over the pool/water feature to the adjacent golf course and distant mountain vistas. The dining room is adjacent to and part of the great room and also captures these same views. A shallow pitched roof with exposed beams in the ceiling in a ‘chevron’ pattern helps to guide the eye to the outside and promote these views. This ‘chevron’ feature was utilized throughout the design as a vehicle to help guide one’s gaze to the distant views showcased throughout the home.

Proceeding to the left from the entry foyer leads up a few steps and along a wide, gently curving corridor to the study and master suite. The master suite features a fireplace across from the headboard wall and a ‘peek-a-boo’ window looks to the distant views. Just outside is a private, covered patio with spectacular views and a natural spa/water feature that cascades down a series of small pools into the main pool/water feature that’s outside the great room.

Proceeding to the right from the entry foyer leads down a few steps and along the same gently curving corridor to the kitchen, family room, outdoor kitchen/dining area, and patio. The pitched roof steps down at each of these spaces following the natural grade all the way to the patio with a lattice cover. From the highest point in the kitchen, the distant views are framed and enhanced through each adjacent space and finally end up at this patio.

Continuing down the gently curving corridor past the kitchen is where the game room with a bar and a pool table is located. Outside is another private patio with more intimate, natural views. Next to the game room are the three guest bedrooms, each with their own private bath and all of them sharing the same intimate, natural view.

From the ‘hub of the wheel’ entry foyer, the gently curving corridor acts as a link to connect all of the spaces like the ‘spokes of a wheel’ with each space featuring its own, private view corridor to the golf course and distant mountain views beyond.

Drawing on the roots of Spanish Colonial homes originally built in the Arcadia Neighborhood this new home sits on ¾ acre lot just south of Camelback Road. The homes three car garage protrudes out from the main home, forming an intimate courtyard on the front of the home. Noise is buffered from nearby Camelback Road by the garages mass. A fireplace provides a focal point to the space.

Although historical in style and scale, the homes interior offers an open floor plan ideal for entertaining. Volume is provided with vaulted ceilings stick framed like the construction of historical structures. A cupola in the kitchen provides ample overhead light from above and lifts the ceiling. A long pool set on axis from the great room offers a beautiful focal point at the rear of the property which draws you outside. The ramada’s semi-circular opening is reflected as a full circle in the dark bottomed pool.

Arcades and covered patios protect the homes “skin” from the east and west sun exposure. The floorplan places all bedrooms together for this young family and a spare bedroom on the opposite side offers flexible use as an exercise room or a guest suite. An outdoor kitchen complete with pizza oven and barbeque is shaded by a steel trellis with a camel arch framing the view of the nearby mountain. The interior rooms are connected to the intimate courtyard spaces with double French doors and Dutch doors allowing kids and dogs to “stay” when required. A custom ceramic tile mosaic depicts an orange tree with family names painted on the fruit. The image was borrowed from the Royal Palms Hotel where the couple was wed and reinforces the family’s love of the citrus groves that once dominated the Arcadia landscape.

Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture is an endless provider of independent outdoor livable spaces, and this special estate on the lower hillside of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona is no exception. Also exceptional, the views: powerful canyon walls of Camelback on one 180 degree panoramic side, and then the sunset view on the other, dramatized by downtown city lights creating a awe inspiring foreground interspersed with mountains. The layout of this home is as unique as it gets to not miss a single framed view of both panoramas.

The layout is basically L-shaped, with the Master Suite on the Upper Level, which includes the Office, Workout room, and a Covered Outdoor Living Room, fondly referred to as the Cigar Deck, outfitted with a Wet Bar and corner fireplace. The main spaces on the main floor, such as the Entry, Great Room, main Wet Bar, Sitting Area and Dining Rooms, converge in the center and primarily stay open like a more contemporary home. To stay authentic with this non-traditional layout, the hand hewn dark wood beams and thick archways of the ceiling define the spaces in the traditionally authentic manner of a typical Mediterranean home. Radiating from the center is one bedroom wing terminating in the media room/theater, and the other being a garage wing that terminates in a guest casita. One of everyone’s most favorite spaces is the Outdoor Kitchen, where the bar wraps around the BBQ and heavily used Green Egg smoker.

Courtyards, fountains, fireplaces, arches, wood, stone, hand painted tile, clay, plaster, wrought-iron and true-divided lights in windows and French doors are truly the language of Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture. This home employs all of these features and then some: groin vaults, barrel vaults, patterned floors, heavily articulated roof masses with low pitches, Juliette balconies, hand carved cantera stone fireplace surrounds and window sills, venetian plaster, and clerestory windows bringing natural light in from both sides of the home.

Even more valuable than this home’s authentic details, materials, and features, which paint the romanticized picture of the Mediterranean, is the human element of the architecture….light….scale….lifestyle.

Emerson Resort & Spa is a beautifully renovated vacation destination located in Catskills Mountains of New York. Once an old farm & barn, this site has undergone multiple changes over the years. Recently, saw it’s most significant change during a renovation by New Haven interior design firm CAMA Inc.

CAMA worked closely with the Emerson Resort & Spa to update and unify the design of interiors across the resort’s campus in an effort to rebrand the Emerson as a restorative destination for wellbeing where one can replenish mind, body, and soul.

Drawing inspiration from biophilic design principles as well as from the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape, this new approach to interiors utilizes materials, textures, patterns, lighting, and artwork that references nature, but also strikes the right balance between casual comfort and sophistication.

This new approach is being realized in the complete renovation of a restaurant, inn rooms, spa, key public spaces, and interior and exterior signage packages.

“Port Watch” is the story of a beautifully constructed New England cape-style home in Kennebunk, Maine. Sitting within a tiny cove and on a river, this lot is an incredible gem within the area.

There was an existing house on site, and per state law, new construction can only be 30% more “volume” as the existing house which limited the size and height of the house. The architect wanted to ensure that the street side of the house is in keeping with the scale of the existing houses in the neighborhood. In the back of the house, the corner was clipped to create this very dramatic view to river. The roofline also has some interesting architectural elements that are reflected on the interior ceilings.

At Mountainside, there was a natural flow of possibilities emanating from the desert itself. The powerful curves of the granite boulders dominated, yet they were held so gently by golden sands and delicate flora. Looking back, all of this spoke about balance and harmony, and this describes my clients as well. The stream of their intentions gathered in wonderful conversations, some meandered around and between grand aspirations eventually pooling in humble clarity. I drank it in with equal passion and began to draw. I drew sketches and plans and details of course, but mostly I drew the hillside with a beautiful life there. It is their life and a remarkable one, too. For that, I am compelled to thank them for the opportunity every time I see them.

They share why a plan bends to light, how materials choose the form, and where a city meets the threshold. We listen, follow, and shape the moments into architectural documentaries that feel honest and human, keeping the frame clear so their craft, conviction, and quiet pride come through.
