Portfolio of Films

Our architectural films are collaborations at heart, with architects, designers, and builders telling the story in their own voice. They share why a plan bends to light, how materials choose the form, and where a city meets the threshold. We listen, follow, and shape the moments into architectural documentaries that feel honest and human, keeping the frame clear so their craft, conviction, and quiet pride come through.

Settled into an upper Sonoran site in North Scottsdale’s Whisper Rock Estates development, the Anderson residence embraces a design influenced by Territorial style of the mid-1800s, as well as later Southern California rambling ranch homes. Both movements are sympathetically reinterpreted to harmonize with the beauty of Whisper Rocks Estates and the Sonoran desert.

The home’s striking, Territorial Ranch design emphasizes such natural elements as native stone which provides a long, horizontal base on which rests the exposed adobe, earth-block structure. Both indigenous materials tie the dwelling to the land, while steel-forged, metal anchors, two-piece mission clay tile roof, and heavy timber detailing create solidity for the casual, rustic dwelling. The result is a sensitive desert home, one that provides a generous and comfortable space for the couple, their children who frequently return for visits, as well as relatives and guests.

Think modern architecture is stark, cold, better to look at than to live in? Think the desert is a hot barren inhospitable place best to be experienced in travel pictures from the Grand Canyon? Think again. Desert Wing is an award winning home designed by architect Brent Kendle, AIA, LEED AP, that speaks poetically of its place in the world while demonstrating that even minimalist modern design can be comfortable and cozy.

Desert Wing appears to soar above the desert, combining copper, steel, glass, concrete, and the ancient tradition of rammed earth walls, into a modern desert retreat that expands the senses and lifts the spirits of all who dwell within. Take a look as architect Brent Kendle shows what makes one of his greatest architectural achievements so special.

This Paradise Valley hillside home in the Sanctuary contains 6,080 sq. ft. of livable area. With 5,358 on the main level and an additional 732 sq. ft. on the lower level.

Both the rocky hillside terrain and the pool are essential characteristics of the home. It embraces a modernist ideal. The complexity of a single family house program can be abstracted and stripped to its essentials by using strictly rectangular/geometric forms.

The overall form, when contrasted with the steep slopes and rocky nature of the site, makes a deeply meaningful statement about the difference between the built and natural environments. The pool embodies this concept and brings the geometry of the home to the exterior.

Its long, linear shape contrasts with the steepness of the hillside creating a moment of appreciation for both the natural site and the built home.

We have also demonstrated how a modern home can be warm and livable. As well, the interior of the home serves as a background to the main focus which is the views to the exterior.

Wanting to surround themselves with the memories of the past and celebrate the inspirations of their family identity and traditions, we helped these homeowners create a living museum in this very special project at Graystone Canyon in Steamboat Springs, CO. The added challenge of keeping the space livable and functional while also showcasing the artifacts in an inviting and pleasing manner created a unique opportunity for our design firm.

With generations of art collections including jade carvings and cloisonné objects from the orient, heirloom steins and pocket watches from Germany and Switzerland, combined with a newer collection of Native American art, this project became a prime example of just how unique and personalized each design job becomes. Working with homeowners as they were preparing to move in, we carefully planned how each area would relate to the next and how each display would accent the importance of the piece.

Interior Design is often times a combination of altering the interior spaces to accommodate the lifestyles of the inhabitants and providing guidance for decorating with personal objects. In this remarkable project we took care to artfully blend personal collections with additional pieces of distinction to help round out the collections for optimal display purposes. Take the homeowners geode collection, for example. With many rare specimens already in their possession, we worked with a local artist to add some larger geodes that eventually became a sculptural base component, which both complimented and showcased the homeowner’s original collection.

Aside from the displays, we also helped tailor each space to their lifestyle needs. The previous owner had used the great room with glass walls as their living room and the smaller room opposite the fireplace as their dining room. The new homeowners liked to entertain and preferred to have the spacious area with views of the canyon accommodate a larger dining area and therefore using the smaller area as a cozy living room instead. Reinventing the spaces created a truly personalized environment for the new homeowners. By incorporating fabrics with the right texture and color, we were able to blend the looks from room to room without overpowering the art.

The upstairs loft presents another example of personalized built-ins. The homeowners needed a space to continue work on the family’s archival process. There they can scan and save digitally the photographs from aging albums, a meticulous and time consuming process. The workstation, which converts into a large area for working, closes up to neatly disguise the work area and converts into a simple bookshelf. When creating a fully custom, convertible cabinet concept, detailed schematics are produced by our designers, fine tuned with the homeowners and engineered with the cabinet maker to create the otherwise unassuming furniture piece.

This project offered a truly unique opportunity to work through so many aspects of interior design at once, including furniture design, interior remodeling, procurement of artwork, upholstery, custom bedding, window treatments, rugs, custom framing and more. We are thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to participate in this beautifully filmed documentary-style brief that offers a glimpse into the development and growth of the Graystone Canyon project.

Emphasizing long term relevance as a central sustainable design principle, the Doerr-Hosier Center received the first LEED Gold rating in its region. While respecting the scale and modulation of the surrounding architecture and landscape, this site sensitive structure brings a fresh voice to the Bauhaus inspired, historically designated surrounding campus.

As a conference center, the Doerr-Hosier Center is a noteworthy departure from the typically dark and fatiguing “ballroom meeting and breakout rooms” solution. This design focuses on a strong connection to nature, where all meeting and gathering spaces open to adjacent terraces and views. Users love this facility and have experienced an enhanced sense of personal energy created by the free flowing floor plan, day lighting, and elements of Feng Shui inspiration.

The skin of pre-cast concrete, zinc, steel, and glass relates to the materials of the campus and provides for a low maintenance exterior. Tented roof terraces add usable square footage for the summer months and give the building an added seasonal dimension. Architect and artist have worked in collaboration to create a “Dynamic Modernism” – a place where structure, nature, and the individual are co-dependent; a place where structure and sculpture are inseparable.

Camp 88 is a clever small-home solution for the empty-nester, absent of unused square-footage and neglected spaces. Rather than one large home containing remote suites occupied only during guest and family visits, this Winter Park ski-area mountain compound gives its owners a comfortable intimate home, with detached guest spaces all anchored by inviting outdoor communal areas and fire pit. Homeowner satisfaction is always a primary focus at Sims Luxury Builders, as illustrated by this story shared by president Chris Sims. “We maintained an extraordinary working relationship with our clients while building this home. Shortly after move-in, they threw an amazing catered party complete with musicians and an ice sculpture for our team and all of the subcontractors and their families. We were given the opportunity to enjoy and admire, for one fabulous evening, the fruits of our collective labor. It was quite gratifying to realize that our clients were extremely pleased with our people, the collaborative process, and of course, the product.”

Art meets life in this Vero Beach home designed for a Manhattan and Hamptons turned Vero Beach Residents. The focus of the Interior design is the use of space and light to open up an art experience. Expansive space, high ceilings, use of an open floor plan and white walls as canvas allow the drama of the art to take center stage.

In Coastal Living at Boca Raton, it’s about comfortable elegance. Fine furnishings in bright jewel tones and a multi use floor plan make for a timeless and relaxed space.

My Interior Design theory is one I call the “The Theory of Relational Space.” It’s all about the client connecting with their space, and Interior design being the conduit for that. Successful Interior design is really all about the person I’m designing for. It’s the philosophy of that person—how they live, how they use their space, what makes them happy, and what delights them when they walk through the door.

As a designer, it’s my passion to connect the dots from the person to the space, so that in the end, they can say
“You got me, I love my home.”

The exciting part of being an interior designer is getting new, unique projects that allow you to break from routine and design truly breathtaking spaces. When Franco began work on this project in the Tampa Bay Area, he knew he wanted to approach it differently with a chic, modern style that allowed you to just soak in the beauty of the Florida landscape. Furniture with clean lines worked wonderfully with lighter wood stains and natural textures. The colors and finishes are in harmony with the homes surroundings and never compete with the beautiful views.

The interior design of this luxury home in Tampa blends timeless style and family friendly design. Every family member was thought of when Franco began the design of this home, from the large open kitchen to the game room off the sitting room. The color palette of this home is a mix of whites, grays, accented with vibrant pops of color.

The homeowners lean towards a more transitional design style, and Franco achieved that by selecting furniture, accessories, and lighting that had clean lines and and paired them with simple yet luxurious fabrics and finishes.

We perceive color as light reflected back to us. Color Theory, developed by Physicist Sir Isaac Newton, provides an explanation as to why our perception of architectural color fluctuates so much. Metamerism and chromatic shift both describe color theory in action.

Architectural color is not static. It fluctuates and changes in response to light, but even more importantly, in relationship to other colors. This is what color theory explains and can even predict. Complementary colors (colors that complete the spectrum of light, like complementary angles in geometry) explain the divine order of color relationships and how they advance to find each other.

This is why the Dwelling Palettes™ are such invaluable color and design tools. They have been developed with the intention of the 12 Benjamin Moore Paint colors selected in each palette to enhance each other and create a whole greater than the sum of the parts. These are not just colors that look pretty together. Due to their complementary nature, they are actually energetically enhanced. The palettes have been developed using the principles of Color Theory and our founder, Emily Lauderback’s one-on-one experience with thousands of homeowners and small business owners.

Color in Space Inc.’s mission is to educate about architectural color and to allow us to use it most effectively in accordance with the divine plan that science and color theory have recognized. Mother Nature creates some of the most beautiful color designs, which we experience as nurturing and healing. Color in Space uses and explains these natural principles to create exquisite color designs that complement and express the intention of the architecture and homeowner.

Who knows, if all architectural color was approached with this intention, perhaps the enhanced energetic relationship of the colors could heal the Earth…it’s all about relationship…how it feels…complements…light.

Set in the beautiful wine country south of Portland, this carefllly detailed custom home fulfills the clients’ dreams. A couple devoted to the field medicine, wished to commit more of their energies to horticulture, cuisine and crafts.

The house is sited to relate to their beautiful gardens and lovely view of the Willamette valley. Most spaces open to the outside. A culinary garden is steps away from a serious kitchen where much of what is grown is preserved and enjoyed.

Both clients are interested in the arts. But now one of them has committed herself full-time to creating ceramics. The project’s program called for as much display space for pottery as possible. In developing this goal, and to satisfy another requirement for lots of natural light and air, a linear Asian pattern emerged throughout the house. The overall result is a sense of a craftsman style to comfortably embrace its inhabitants and their crafts.
